HIPAA Electronic Transaction and Code Set Contingency Plan

While the American Postal Workers Union, AFL-CIO, Health Plan Department (APWUHP) will be able to accept and process HIPAA compliant transactions, the APWUHP is actively assessing the readiness of its trading partners to make sure that cash flow to its members and member's providers of services will not be disrupted.

Consistent with the recent guidance from CMS, the APWUHP contingency plan is to continue to accept and process transactions that are submitted in legacy formats while our trading partners work through issues related to implementing the HIPAA electronic transactions and code set standards.

The APWUHP will continue its active outreach and testing efforts to bring its trading partners into compliance in the days before and, if necessary, after October 16, 2003.
