Preventive care can help you stay healthy

Preventive health care includes services like doctor checkups and routine screenings that can help prevent diseases and other health problems. Taking advantage of your preventive care benefits can help you stay healthy and discover a health issue before it becomes a serious problem. Treatment is often more effective when an illness is detected early.

Your plan covers 100 percent of in-network preventive care

Making healthy lifestyle choices is the key to maintaining your health and well-being. But preventive care is important, too. APWU Health Plans offer 100 percent coverage for a wide range of in-network preventive tests, screenings, and routine physical exams. Check your plan documents for a complete list of covered preventive care services.

Visit your doctor each year for a regular checkup, even if you feel healthy. Your doctor can identify risk factors for diseases, share tips for healthy living, and make sure your immunizations are up to date. Regular preventive care visits are part of maintaining a good relationship with your primary health care provider.

High Option Plan: Preventive care for adults

The APWU High Option Plan provides extensive preventive benefits to help you stay well. In addition to one routine physical exam per person each year, the plan covers a number of lab tests and screenings to check your blood pressure, cholesterol levels, lipids, and more. Covered screenings may vary, depending on your age and gender.

Consumer Driven Option: Preventive care for adults

Under the APWU Consumer Driven Option, the plan covers 100 percent of preventive care for adults, as long as you use a network PPO provider. Covered services are based on recommendations by the American Medical Association. In addition to one routine physical exam per person each year, the plan covers a number of lab tests and screenings to check your blood pressure, cholesterol levels, lipids, and more. Covered screenings may vary, depending on your age and gender.

Well-woman care

Both APWU Health Plans offer a well-woman benefit that provides 100 percent coverage for a full range of in-network women’s preventive services, based on current recommendations.

Preventive care for children

To keep children well, APWU Health Plans offer 100 percent coverage for well-child visits, exams, immunizations, and lab tests as described in the Bright Future Guidelines provided by the American Academy of Pediatrics. The guidelines offer theory-based, evidence-driven guidance for preventive care screenings and well-child visits.

Preventive medications

Your plan also covers preventive medications that promote better health, as recommended by the Affordable Care Act. If your doctor or health care professional prescribes a preventive medication, and you fill the prescription at a network pharmacy, you’ll have no additional costs. Preventive medications include some over-the-counter vitamins, nicotine replacement medications, and low-dose aspirin.
